About

My Name is Dom Pickett, between 2018-2021 I studied Prop Making for my Theatre Practice degree from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. My background is in tradeswork and skilled labour, working as a shopfitter prior to university was the foundation for my enjoyment and passion for making and crafting.

Whether it be a simple jig, 3D printed part or a small adjustment to a big project, critical thinking is my strongest ability when it comes to prop making. Issues are a part of this industry and understanding how to deal with and fix them is an important skill on its own of which I pride myself in being able to make an objective view on such scenarios. Along with a good humoured and lively nature, I keep cool and calm when faced with tough or high pressure situations.

I chose to go down the prop making route as I absolutely love all things film and television and knew from a young age it was the kind of thing I wanted to go into. I am especially interested by films which include a lot of practical effects and sets/props which really give the audience an out of this world feeling. Although its what you’ll hear every prop maker say when asked about inspiration, I do genuinely have to say the original Star Wars Trilogy is a big one for me for the very simple reason is that every single thing you see within those films is fabricated. Every single wall, alien and ship was made for the film and the fact that the franchise is still going after 40+ years is definitely down to the effort they put in back then. One day, I hope to work on a franchise which is popular absolutely years into the future.

I never really got to experience the West End until coming to London and from then on, I loved the inclusivity and interdepartmental relationships theatre productions and events share. For projects within Central, I enjoyed this sense of community and having to work alongside different departments for months leading up to a weeks worth of pride as a show goes live.
