"Welcome To Thebes" Neon Sign - The construction students loved me Or so I thought… At just about 6 metres long, the sign was built as a flat. The prop itself was a large sign that read the title of the show “Welcome To Thebes” which hung above the set for the entirety of the show. The “bes” in the last word was to look as if it had fallen off. To approach this, I scaled up the model sign within the modelbox and was able to determine the kind of proportions the designer wanted. The most important and admittedly tedious job of the process was wiring all the LED strips on the front and soldering it all together. We vacuum formed cardboard tubes to give a faux neon light effect, however we then decided to FEV the inside plastic to give the colouring and I believe it came out far too blotchy and uneven. Weight distribution was the most important thing to consider for this helmet as the taller it got, the higher the centre of mass was. This was important as the “Jesus” character would be on a bike (see “custom bike and podium”) and falling off of that due to dizziness or unbalancement would really not be ideal for the paying audience members. The helmet was a very interesting build as the reference image was something I had never even seen before. Not only is it easy to use, the level of detail thats kept after baking basically eliminates the entire mould making and fibreglassing process. The construction of the podium saw a lot of manual cutting as I wanted to use as little CNC’ed pieces as I could. After the initial modelbox meeting, I was able to scale the relevant models up and gain the dimensions for the full size bike podium.
